The way the Caroline Small police shooting case was handled by local officials in Glynn County has been called a miscarriage of justice by many who have read the AJC/Channel 2 Action News investigation that examined the case this year.
Two Glynn County Police officers fired eight bullets into Caroline Small’s windshield. Small was 35-years-old and a mother of two.
On Thursday, Small’s family and their supporters asked Governor Nathan Deal and Attorney General Sam Olens to intervene and reopen the case. Their direct appeal to the top state leaders is recognition that there’s little hope of Glynn County District Attorney Jackie Johnson reopening the case on her own.
Johnson was the subject of an AJC/Channel 2 story published Sunday where four former prosecutors in her office described how she mishandled the 2010 shooting case and fired or froze out the group of assistant district attorneys who watched the video of the shooting in the days after she was killed and thought a crime had been committed. One ex-prosecutor called it a murder and a cover-up.
The governor and attorney general have yet to say whether they will take action on the family’s request to have a full and fair investigation of the shooting and how it was prosecuted by Johnson.
